Lady Bug blog post 9/12/2020 (very late sorry Shane)

Hi, I’m Helfred Honda, I live in some random American forest. Today i was in my basement (in the pic to the right) and I was
just eating some Aphrodi Lays Shells Extra Sap on my leaf outcropping when some crazy mites were like AYE STOP EATING MY FELLOW PLANT EATERS. I was like nah fam I love these Aphrido Lays Extra Shells Sap, and then they was like we gone eat you if you don’t and i was like fight me you tiny little plant eaters and so I ate them because there was like three of them and I am clearly superior.

light pollution 4/24/2020

SO, this week my science teacher assigned me and my class to write about light pollution and the importance of turning our lights off. Millions of sea turtles die each year due to light pollution, because they think bright street lights are the glow of the sea from the sun and the moon. Here is what I wrote:

Light pollution in Traverse City

The three key strategies used by Traverse City to regulate light include: Limit light that contributes to “sky glow” and overall enhance the quality of nighttime, Keep light from intruding on others property, and Reduce the harshness of light by covering them with diffusers. On my exploration, I saw light that had caps, lights that were diffused and lights that were spaced out to reduce overall brightness. For more information you can visit the Traverse City website. Below are some portions of Traverse City’s Outdoor Lighting Ordinance.

Chapter 1375 – Outdoor Lighting

It is the intent of Outdoor Lighting regulations to:

  • Minimize light trespass and light straying from artificial light sources;
  • Eliminate intrusive artificial lighting that contributes to the “sky glow” phenomenon and disrupts the natural quality of nighttime;
  • Minimize harshly lighted surfaces and direct glare in order to enhance nighttime vision;
  • Encourage lighting practices and lighting systems that are designed to conserve energy; and
  • Provide for adequate nighttime safety, utility, security, and productivity.

Photometric Plan

I talked to the Planning and Zoning Administrator for Traverse City, David Weston. He told me, “When development occurs and they are using exterior lighting they must submit a photo-metric plan demonstrating that they are meeting the ordinance.” Below is an example of a photo-metric plan.

Questions

  1. How can we prevent light pollution?
  2. Does the extinction of sea turtles have more to do with plastic in the ocean or light pollution?
  3. What is the night park you were talking about called?

4/9/2020

The Covid-19 outbreak has made school a lot harder. The main reason is that now my teacher is also the person who works on something else for half the day and she really can’t deal with me when she has to figure out Goodwill. Because Goodwill had the GrEaT idea (I don’t like the idea)  to have their workers deal with the virus. So I have to balance school work with arguing with my mom over school work because she wants to make me do more than I have to on literally EVERYTHING that you assign. I also can’t do all the stuff that you guys assign because most of the projects require me to go find things in my house, or go outside and make something. So I’m moving back and forth from my computer all day. I also only get a 30 minute break at lunch.

Questions:

  1.  How long do you think the virus will last?
  2.  Do you know if tapestry is still happening?
  3. Do you think that we’ll still be going to Canada?

Corona 3/20/2020

This was a weird week. We all closed everything and now were doing all our stuff on the internet. And the corona virus is all over America. I did my vocabulary and I’m doing the no-bakes later because my mom is working with goodwill on the Corona stuff. I haven’t been in another building since my house since school ended.

  1. How long until we go back to school?
  2. Why did it snow?!
  3. How long do you think it’ll be before it’s all over Traverse City?

BOIMES 11/25/2019

This week we worked on biomes. I chose Rain Forests. The reason I chose Rain Forests is because they have THICK lily pads. My favorite part of the entire project was making my shoe box that had both of our animals and our plants. We also had to make a website with a home page, a page about human interference, a page about our two plants and a page for our two animals.

We all chose our biomes depending on nothing but preference, meaning Shane, who if you didn’t know, is our Science teacher, did not interfere in our decision. I think this is an important lesson because it shows us what is going on in our biomes, and teaches us about one specific place that we like, its also important because it teaches us about all the different types of places in the world.

11/10 FOOT FUNGUS

This week we did a “play” in Science and we presented it to the 8- and 9-year-olds. These were the roles:

Me: Widow Sycamore
Aidan: Narrator
Alisha: Woody Woodpecker
Audrey: Vera Violet
Lizzie: Judge
Gus: Freddie (FOOT) Fungus

The play was basically a trial for Freddy (FOOT) Fungus. My husband Mr. Sycamore died two years after Freddy (FOOT) Fungus landed on him as a spore. We are debating if he killed Mr. Sycamore, or if he died because of old age. We all had connections to Freddy (FOOT) Fungus except for the Narrator and The Judge. I learned that Fungus is important because it help woodpeckers and flowers.

We all spoke about our connections to Mr. Sycamore and explained our relationships with him and how he effected each of us. We also talked of Freddy’s effect on us. This was important for the small ones to learn about all of the Fungus’ connections and how important it is in an ecosystem.

QUESTIONS:

1. Did the small ones understand?

2. What kind of fungus is the FOOT Fungus?

3. How important was this for the small ones?
